Four States Request Extension Until Year-End to Complete Green Energy Corridor

Rajasthan, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, and Tamil Nadu have requested additional time until December 2025 to complete the implementation of the Intrastate Transmission System Green Energy Corridor Phase-I (InSTS GEC-I). Meanwhile, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Gujarat, and Himachal Pradesh have already finalized their projects.

Shripad Naik, Minister of State in the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), informed the Lok Sabha that these four states have successfully completed their green energy corridor projects.

The Minister also provided details about the funds approved and disbursed for the program on a state-wise basis.

Additionally, seven states—Gujarat, Himachal Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, and Uttar Pradesh—are in the process of implementing the second phase of the intrastate green energy corridor program. The government approved this phase in 2022, with a deadline set for the end of the 2026 financial year. Phase-II plans to establish approximately 10,750 circuit kilometers of transmission lines and 27,500 MVA of substation capacity to integrate 20 GW of renewable energy capacity.

The government has also introduced several technological initiatives to support India’s renewable energy integration:
  • Creating renewable energy management centers for real-time forecasting, scheduling, and monitoring across 12 renewable-rich regions
  • Issuing guidelines for the procurement and use of battery energy storage systems
  • Developing high-voltage direct current corridors for efficient long-distance renewable energy transfer
  • Launching guidelines for pumped storage projects
  • Enabling ancillary services from energy storage systems under the CERC (Ancillary Services) Regulations, 2022

  • The green energy corridor program aims to synchronize power generated from sources like solar and wind with the existing conventional power grid. The third phase of the project will involve constructing an additional 8,862 circuit kilometers of transmission lines and increasing capacity by 9,500 MVA.
