GIZ India has signed a three-year Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Department of Power, Government of Tripura, represented by the Tripura State Electricity Corporation Limited (TSECL) and the Tripura Renewable Energy Development Agency (TREDA), to accelerate the deployment of distributed renewable energy (DRE) solutions across the state. The partnership aims to strengthen Tripura's clean energy ecosystem through policy support, institutional capacity building, and the promotion of decentralised renewable energy technologies.

The collaboration will focus on expanding the adoption of distributed renewable energy systems, including rooftop solar installations and other decentralised clean energy solutions that generate electricity close to the point of consumption. Such systems help reduce transmission losses, improve grid reliability, enhance energy access in remote areas, and contribute to the state's broader transition toward sustainable and resilient power infrastructure.

Under the agreement, GIZ India and the Government of Tripura will work together to strengthen the state's policy and regulatory framework for renewable energy while enhancing the technical and institutional capabilities of government agencies and power utilities. The partnership will also support the implementation of flagship national programmes, particularly the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana, which aims to accelerate residential rooftop solar adoption across India by providing financial assistance to households.

A significant component of the partnership is the promotion of inclusive clean energy development. The MoU includes initiatives to increase women's participation in the renewable energy sector through skill development, technical training, entrepreneurship support, and employment opportunities. By encouraging greater gender diversity within the clean energy workforce, the programme seeks to create more inclusive and sustainable economic opportunities while supporting the growth of India's renewable energy industry.

The agreement also provides for the development of pilot projects, technical studies, demonstration initiatives, and knowledge-sharing programmes to evaluate emerging renewable energy technologies and innovative business models. These activities are expected to help identify scalable solutions that can improve energy access, strengthen grid resilience, and accelerate the adoption of decentralised clean energy systems across Tripura.

The Memorandum of Understanding was signed in the presence of V. Anantha Nageswaran, Chief Economic Adviser to the Government of India, and Jitendra Kumar Sinha, Chief Secretary of the Government of Tripura, highlighting the strategic importance of the collaboration in advancing the state's long-term energy transition objectives.

The initiative supports the broader goals of the India-Germany Green and Sustainable Development Partnership (GSDP), which promotes cooperation in climate action, renewable energy, sustainable urban development, resource efficiency, and green economic growth. Through GIZ, Germany has been working closely with Indian central and state governments to strengthen clean energy deployment, improve energy efficiency, and support climate-resilient infrastructure development.

Tripura has been steadily increasing its focus on renewable energy as part of efforts to diversify its electricity mix, improve rural electrification, and reduce dependence on conventional energy sources. Distributed renewable energy systems such as rooftop solar are expected to play an increasingly important role in enhancing energy security, lowering electricity costs for consumers, and supporting the state's climate and sustainability objectives.

With this three-year partnership, GIZ India and the Government of Tripura aim to create a stronger foundation for decentralised renewable energy deployment by combining policy reforms, institutional strengthening, technical innovation, and capacity building. The collaboration is expected to accelerate clean energy adoption, improve access to affordable electricity, and contribute to a more resilient, inclusive, and sustainable power sector in the state.
