Google Gets Discom Licence for 1 GW Vizag Data Centre Project

The approval clears the way for uninterrupted power supply to its Visakhapatnam facility, a key part of a USD 15 billion digital infrastructure push.
Google has obtained a power distribution (Discom) licence for its planned 1 GW data centre hub in Visakhapatnam, marking a notable regulatory milestone in India’s energy and digital infrastructure landscape.
The licence received clearance from the Andhra Pradesh Cabinet shortly before the project’s expected groundbreaking later this month. The ceremony is likely to be held around April 28, indicating the project’s shift from the planning phase into active development.
This initiative forms part of a broader investment estimated at USD 15 billion, making it one of the most significant foreign investments in India’s digital ecosystem. The expansion aligns with the growing global need for high-capacity computing infrastructure, fueled by rising demand for cloud platforms, artificial intelligence applications, and large-scale data storage.
With this approval, Google becomes the first private entity in India to be granted a dedicated power distribution licence of this nature. The move underscores both the scale of the project and its substantial energy requirements, while also highlighting close coordination between the company and state authorities to ensure reliable electricity supply.
The decision further signals strong policy support from the Government of Andhra Pradesh, reinforcing its vision to position the state as a leading destination for data centres and digital infrastructure development in the country.
