Jan 21, 2025

Union Minister of New and Renewable Energy, Shri Pralhad Joshi, reaffirmed India’s leadership in the global renewable energy sector, projecting that the country will exceed its 500 GW renewable energy capacity target by 2030. Addressing a Regional Review Meeting on Renewable Energy in Jaipur, he emphasized the vital role of renewables in doubling India’s power demand by 2032 and transitioning to a sustainable energy economy.

The meeting reviewed progress in Northern states, including Jammu & Kashmir, Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Chandigarh, Haryana, Rajasthan, Uttarakhand, and Uttar Pradesh. Highlighting the Panchamrit initiative announced at COP26, Minister Joshi pointed to India’s ambitious green hydrogen mission and investments worth Rs32 lakh crore in renewables as testimony to its long-term commitment to energy security.

He announced an additional 5,000 MW allocation to Rajasthan under the PM-KUSUM scheme and inaugurated four new solar power projects totaling 1,200 MW in Jaisalmer. Minister Joshi underscored the government’s focus on collaboration with states to advance renewable energy adoption. Similar state-level review meetings have taken place in Gandhinagar, Bhubaneswar, Kolkata, and Mumbai, with future sessions planned in Visakhapatnam, Varanasi, and Guwahati.

During the meeting, incentives for rooftop solar promotion were distributed to several Discoms. Among the recipients were Jodhpur and Ajmer Discoms in Rajasthan, receiving Rs39.43 crore and Rs17.59 crore, respectively, for FY 2021 to FY 2024. Haryana’s Dakshin and Uttar Discoms received Rs42.68 crore and Rs22.43 crore for FY 2020 to FY 2023, while Punjab and Uttarakhand received Rs11.39 crore and Rs9.48 crore, respectively.

Renewable Energy Milestones

Ms. Nidhi Khare, Secretary of MNRE, reported that India’s renewable energy capacity has surpassed 200 GW, led by 97 GW of solar power, 48 GW of wind energy, and 52 GW of hydroelectric capacity. She urged stakeholders to adopt innovative strategies to overcome existing challenges and accelerate progress toward future goals.

Shri Sudeep Jain, Additional Secretary, MNRE, reiterated India’s commitment to 500 GW by 2030 and an ambitious target of 1,800 GW by 2047. He called for collaborative approaches and knowledge-sharing workshops to drive innovation in the renewable energy sector.

Regional and State Initiatives

Jammu & Kashmir’s Minister for Science & Technology, Shri Satish Misra, outlined efforts to install over 35 MW of domestic solar capacity and deploy 3,000 solar pumps. Himachal Pradesh’s Minister for Town Planning, Shri Rajesh Dharmani, highlighted the state’s target of 100% non-fossil energy by 2026 and green hydrogen development.

In Rajasthan, significant milestones include a 2,000 MW Battery Energy Storage System and a leadership position in solar and wind energy. Energy Minister Shri Heeralal Nagar reiterated the state’s commitment to 125 GW by 2030.

The workshop showcased India’s continued progress in green energy, emphasizing global partnerships and innovative solutions like green hydrogen and distributed energy systems to ensure a sustainable future.
