India Records Historic 52.5 GW Power Capacity Addition in FY26
Feb 16, 2026
India has added a record 52.5 GW of power generation capacity in the current financial year up to January 31, 2026 — the highest annual addition to date, surpassing the previous peak of 34 GW achieved in FY25.
Renewable energy accounted for the majority of new capacity. Of the 52.5 GW added, 39.7 GW came from renewable sources, including 34.9 GW of solar and 4.6 GW of wind installations. The continued acceleration in solar deployment, supported by large utility-scale projects and faster execution timelines, has been central to this growth.
Conventional sources contributed the remaining additions, with thermal power accounting for 8,810 MW during the period.
Installed Capacity Crosses 520 GW
As of January 31, 2026, India’s total installed power generation capacity stands at 520.5 GW. Of this:
• 248.5 GW is fossil fuel-based
• 272 GW comes from non-fossil fuel sources
Within the non-fossil segment, renewable energy contributes 263.2 GW, while nuclear power adds 8.8 GW.
The latest expansion marks a structural shift in India’s energy mix, with non-fossil capacity now exceeding fossil fuel-based capacity in total installed terms. This transition reflects sustained policy backing for renewable deployment, grid expansion, and transmission infrastructure strengthening.
Power demand growth in FY26 has moderated compared to the sharp increases seen in the previous two years, partly due to a high base effect and more favourable weather conditions.
