India’s Renewable Power Output Grows at Fastest Pace in Three Years

Oct 26, 2025

India’s renewable energy sector is showing robust growth, with renewable power output increasing at its fastest rate in three years.

According to recent data, India’s renewable generation (excluding large hydro) reached 134.43 billion kWh between January and June 2025, marking a 24.4% year-on-year increase. This surge has pushed the renewable share of India’s electricity mix to over 17% in June 2025, a record high for the country.

The growth is primarily driven by solar and wind projects, supported by favourable government policies and declining installation costs. Residential, commercial, and industrial rooftop solar projects, along with utility-scale solar farms, have contributed significantly to this expansion.

Experts note that the rapid increase in renewable generation is helping India move closer to its ambitious climate targets and reducing dependence on fossil fuels. The government’s initiatives, including incentives for rooftop solar adoption and renewable purchase obligations for distribution companies, are playing a pivotal role.

While challenges remain, such as grid integration and storage requirements, the trend indicates a steady momentum in India’s clean energy transition. The growing capacity not only helps meet domestic energy demand sustainably but also positions India as a leading renewable energy market globally.
