INR 5 Trillion Transmission Projects Underway to Support India’s Renewable Push

Apr 13, 2026

Power transmission projects worth nearly Rs5 trillion are currently under bidding or execution across India, as the government accelerates efforts to strengthen grid infrastructure and address bottlenecks in renewable energy expansion. A senior official from the Ministry of Power highlighted that transmission constraints have recently emerged as a key challenge in scaling up clean energy capacity.

Officials noted that to achieve the target of 500 GW of non-fossil fuel capacity by 2030, a robust transmission network is already being developed. In total, transmission projects at various stages—bidding and implementation—are estimated to account for investments of around Rs2.5 trillion.

During FY26, projects worth approximately Rs1 trillion progressed through the National Committee on Transmission stage, while another Rs1.47 trillion worth of projects advanced beyond the Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) phase, indicating strong momentum in infrastructure development.

The government’s broader objective is to build a next-generation, integrated, and intelligent national grid capable of seamlessly incorporating renewable energy and storage systems. This grid will also support emerging demand centers such as green hydrogen production and data infrastructure.

Meanwhile, the Central Electricity Authority has prepared a long-term transmission plan to integrate over 900 GW of non-fossil fuel capacity by 2035–36. Experts emphasize that alongside infrastructure expansion, strengthening domestic manufacturing and supply chains will be crucial to achieving energy security and supporting India’s clean energy ambitions.
