JSW Energy Finalises Turbine Generator Supply for 1,600 MW Salboni Thermal Power Project
Jan 19, 2026
JSW Thermal Energy Limited (“JSW Thermal”), a wholly owned subsidiary of JSW Energy Limited (“JSW Energy” or “the Company”), has entered into a contract with its associate company, Toshiba JSW Power Systems Private Limited (“Toshiba JSW”), for the supply of two steam turbine generator units, each with a capacity of 800 MW, for the Salboni Thermal Power Project in West Bengal.
The turbine-generator packages will be manufactured and delivered in alignment with the project’s construction schedule, supporting the timely execution and commissioning of the 1,600 MW plant. By sourcing critical equipment through an associate entity, JSW Energy aims to strengthen supply-chain reliability, enhance coordination during project execution, and mitigate risks associated with industry-wide equipment availability constraints.
JSW Energy currently owns and operates 5,658 MW of thermal generation capacity, powered by a blend of domestic and imported coal. With the Salboni project adding 1,600 MW under construction and a potential expansion of 1,800 MW at the KSK Mahanadi plant, the Company’s total thermal capacity is expected to rise to 9,058 MW. This would account for approximately 30 percent of JSW Energy’s total locked-in generation capacity of 30.5 GW, reflecting the continued importance of thermal power within its diversified generation portfolio.
Commenting on the development, Mr. Sharad Mahendra, Joint Managing Director and CEO, JSW Energy, said:
“The turbine generator supply agreement with Toshiba JSW is a strategic step toward strengthening supply-chain control and ensuring execution certainty for the Salboni Thermal Power Project. Our association with Toshiba, which began in 2008, is founded on shared values of excellence, innovation, and long-term value creation, and this collaboration further reinforces that trusted partnership.
The Salboni project demonstrates our commitment to India’s energy security by adding dependable baseload capacity that complements the country’s expanding renewable energy footprint. As India progresses toward its long-term energy transition objectives, thermal power will continue to play a critical role in maintaining grid stability and system resilience. We are proud to support the nation’s roadmap of incrementally adding nearly 100 GW of thermal capacity while contributing to the vision of a balanced, secure, and future-ready power system under Atmanirbhar Bharat.”
JSW Energy has a total locked-in generation capacity of 30.5 GW, comprising 13.3 GW of operational capacity, 12.4 GW under construction across thermal and renewable projects, 150 MW of hydro capacity under acquisition, and a development pipeline of 4.6 GW. The Company also has 29.4 GWh of locked-in energy storage capacity, including 26.4 GWh from hydro pumped storage projects and 3.0 GWh from battery energy storage systems.
JSW Energy aims to achieve 30 GW of generation capacity and 40 GWh of energy storage capacity by FY 2030, while targeting carbon neutrality by 2050.
