L&T Wins Rs 2,500–5,000 Crore EPC Order for 3,000 MW Pumped Storage Project in Maharashtra

Jan 14, 2026

Larsen & Toubro’s Heavy Civil Infrastructure business has secured a major contract valued between Rs2,500 crore and Rs5,000 crore from Torrent Energy Storage Solutions for the development of the 3,000 MW Saidongar-1 Pumped Storage Project (PSP) in Raigad district, Maharashtra.

The large-scale pumped storage facility will comprise ten units of 300 MW each, forming one of the country’s significant grid-scale energy storage projects. Under the contract, L&T will be responsible for the complete civil and hydro-mechanical scope, including design, engineering, and execution works.

According to the company, the project is expected to play a crucial role in strengthening grid stability and improving energy security for Maharashtra and neighbouring regions, particularly as renewable energy penetration continues to rise.

L&T stated that the order underscores its proven expertise in delivering complex hydroelectric and pumped storage infrastructure projects of national importance. The company highlighted its track record in engineering excellence, adherence to safety standards, and timely project execution as key factors behind the contract award.

Pumped storage projects such as Saidongar-1 are increasingly viewed as critical enablers of India’s clean energy transition. By storing excess electricity during periods of low demand and releasing it during peak hours, these projects provide flexible, dispatchable power, supporting grid reliability while facilitating higher integration of renewable energy.

The Saidongar-1 PSP is aligned with India’s broader goals of energy security, peak load management, and long-term decarbonisation, reinforcing the strategic importance of pumped storage solutions in the evolving power sector.
