MNRE Calls on States to Disclose Available Grid Transmission Capacity, Highlights Rajasthan’s Transparency Model

Dec 19, 2025

The Union Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) has urged State governments to enhance transparency in the power sector by regularly publishing data on spare transmission capacity available at grid substations.

According to the Ministry, public access to updated information on available grid capacity would help renewable energy developers plan projects more effectively, minimise uncertainty related to grid connectivity, and facilitate quicker and more informed investment decisions.

As a reference model, MNRE highlighted Rajasthan, where Rajasthan Rajya Vidyut Prasaran Nigam Limited (RVPNL) has already implemented the practice of publishing real-time spare transmission capacity at State-level grid substations. While the Central Transmission Utility of India Limited (CTUIL) provides similar information for interstate transmission system (ISTS) substations, Rajasthan has extended this transparency initiative to the State grid, covering key voltage levels and updating the information periodically on a publicly accessible portal.

Officials from RVPNL noted that the availability of this data enables developers to evaluate connectivity options at an early stage, improves project scheduling, and enhances overall visibility of grid readiness. Based on Rajasthan’s experience, MNRE has requested all State Transmission Utilities to adopt a comparable system, signalling a move toward nationwide standardisation of this transparency-led approach.

The Ministry added that as India advances toward its renewable energy expansion goals, measures such as these will be critical in addressing grid integration challenges and accelerating the pace of clean energy deployment across the country.
