MNRE to Unveil Small Hydro Policy to Boost North East’s Renewable Growth
Nov 03, 2025
Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy Pralhad Joshi announced that the MNRE will soon launch a Small Hydro Policy to accelerate clean energy development in India’s North Eastern region.
Speaking at the Regional Workshop on Renewable Energy for the North East Zone in Guwahati, Joshi emphasized the region’s 122 GW renewable energy potential, of which only 5.1 GW has been utilized so far. He urged state governments to fast-track programs like PM-Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana and PM-KUSUM to expand solar and decentralized power generation.
Joshi praised Assam’s Integrated Clean Energy Policy under Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, calling it a model for other states. He said the new hydro policy will provide greater policy and financial support to enhance the region’s renewable ecosystem.
Energy ministers from Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Sikkim, Meghalaya, and Tripura discussed project progress, challenges, and green energy initiatives. The event also recognized Tripura and Arunachal Pradesh for their performance under PM-KUSUM, and Assam and Mizoram for their success in PM-Surya Ghar.
The workshop concluded with a call for stronger collaboration between the Centre, states, and industry to unlock the North East’s full clean energy potential.
