MNRE Updates Green Hydrogen Pilot Guidelines for Decentralized, Off-Grid Applications
Aug 11, 2025
The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) has released revised guidelines for pilot projects using green hydrogen and its derivatives in residential, commercial, and decentralized sectors. These projects will focus on off-grid, localized applications such as cooking, heating, off-road mobility, and power generation. Production can use rooftop solar, micro-hydro, floating solar, biomass, or wastewater.
The initiative also extends to the shipping sector, supporting green ammonia and methanol projects. It is part of the National Green Hydrogen Mission under Mode 2A, with a total budget of Rs2 billion until FY 2026. The funding is split evenly:
Eligible participants include government agencies, private companies, ports, and consortiums. Projects must run for at least 10 years, with no asset transfer without MNRE approval.
Funding covers 80% of equipment costs for private projects and 100% for government ones, disbursed in three tranches based on milestones. Projects must be commissioned within 24–30 months. Operational data will guide future large-scale hydrogen deployment.
The MNRE has also issued a second call for R&D proposals under the mission.
