NHPC Begins Full Operations at 300 MW Karnisar Solar Project in Rajasthan

Oct 28, 2025

NHPC has started commercial operations at its 300 MW Karnisar Solar Project in Bikaner, Rajasthan, marking the completion of the project’s final 85.72 MW phase.

With this milestone, NHPC’s total renewable portfolio has expanded to six solar projects totaling 511.70 MW, along with 50 MW of wind capacity. The company’s overall installed power capacity now stands at 8,332.90 MW as of October 14, 2025.

Through its clean energy subsidiary, NHPC Renewable Energy, the company is currently developing 6,680 MW of solar capacity across India.

In addition to multiple ground-mounted and rooftop solar initiatives, NHPC has been actively advancing projects that integrate battery storage and firm renewable energy solutions. Earlier this year, it awarded its 500 MWh standalone battery energy storage system (BESS) projects to be set up in Kerala.

In July, NHPC invited bids for several projects, including 4.79 MW of rooftop solar installations on government buildings in Manipur and 1,200 MW of ground-mounted solar projects at the Jalaun Solar Park in Uttar Pradesh.

In June, the company also sought developers for 19.2 MW of grid-connected rooftop solar projects across 18 districts in Haryana, with individual project capacities ranging from 25 kW to 495 kW.

Additionally, NHPC has called for bids to develop 1.2 GW of solar capacity paired with a 600 MW / 2,400 GWh energy storage system at any suitable location in India.

In December 2024, NHPC concluded an auction for 1,200 MW of firm and dispatchable renewable energy (FDRE) projects, offering a greenshoe option for another 1,200 MW. The winning tariffs ranged between Rs 4.48 (~$0.0528)/kWh and Rs 4.56 (~$0.0538)/kWh.
