NISE and Toyota Kirloskar Motor Ink MoU to Accelerate Green Hydrogen Mobility in India
Dec 12, 2025
The National Institute of Solar Energy (NISE) and Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM) have entered into a Memorandum of Understanding aimed at pushing forward green hydrogen–powered mobility in India. The partnership will support the National Green Hydrogen Mission by enabling real-world testing of Toyota’s Mirai Fuel-Cell Electric Vehicle (FCEV) under a wide range of Indian operating conditions.
The MoU was formalised between Dr. Mohammad Rihan, Director General of NISE, and Vikram Gulati, Country Head and Executive Vice President for Corporate Affairs & Governance at TKM, in the presence of Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy Pralhad Joshi and Minister of State Shripad Yesso Naik.
Highlighting green hydrogen’s growing global significance, Minister Joshi noted that the collaboration—along with the handover of the Toyota Mirai to NISE—brings together innovation, scientific expertise, and industry leadership to accelerate India’s clean mobility transition. The Mirai will undergo comprehensive testing over the next two years, with NISE evaluating its performance across high heat, dust, congestion, varied terrain, and fuel quality differences.
According to the MNRE, the study will generate essential data for scaling hydrogen mobility nationwide while helping build technical capacity and awareness among policymakers, researchers, and industry stakeholders. Joshi, who personally test-drove the vehicle, reiterated that hydrogen fuel-cell vehicles—clean, silent, and emitting only water—are rapidly being adopted for multiple transport and power applications worldwide.
Minister Naik added that this initiative reflects India’s shift from policy vision to on-ground experimentation and eventual commercialisation of hydrogen-based transport solutions. He emphasised that assessing the Mirai under real Indian conditions will provide critical insights for wider deployment, improving air quality, and advancing sustainable mobility goals.
Vikram Gulati of TKM said the partnership demonstrates Toyota’s commitment to supporting India’s Green Hydrogen Mission and progressing toward future mobility solutions powered by indigenous, low-carbon energy sources. He noted that hydrogen fuel-cell technology, alongside other clean mobility pathways, will be vital for achieving India’s net-zero and energy independence targets.
By promoting the adoption of green hydrogen in transportation, the collaboration between NISE and Toyota aims to establish new standards for environmental leadership and contribute meaningfully to India’s renewable energy and decarbonisation objectives.
