NPCIL Invites Proposals from Indian Industries for 220 MW Bharat Small Reactors (BSR)

Jan 02, 2025

The Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL) has issued a Request for Proposals (RFP), inviting innovative and visionary Indian industries to participate in setting up 220 MW Bharat Small Reactors (BSRs) for captive use.

Bharat Small Reactors (BSRs): BSRs are 220 MW Pressurised Heavy Water Reactors (PHWR) known for their impeccable safety record and high-performance efficiency. These reactors are compact and specifically designed for captive industrial use, offering a tailored solution for energy-intensive sectors.

BSRs are poised to play a critical role in supporting hard-to-abate industries with their decarbonization efforts. By leveraging nuclear energy, industries can achieve:

  • Reduced carbon emissions, contributing to sustainability goals.
  • Cost savings on carbon-emission-related taxes, enhancing global competitiveness.
  • Reliable and clean energy, ensuring consistent operations.

Aligned with the 2024-25 Union Budget announcements, the initiative aims to involve private capital within the existing legal framework and approved business models. This approach underscores the government’s commitment to fostering public-private partnerships in advancing India’s clean energy goals.

The introduction of Bharat Small Reactors marks a transformative step toward achieving India’s net-zero goals, empowering industries to adopt sustainable and economically viable energy solutions.

Industries with a vision for sustainable growth are encouraged to seize this opportunity to contribute to a cleaner and greener future.
