NTPC Renewable Energy Floats EPC Tender for 250 MW/1 GWh Battery Storage Project

Feb 10, 2026

NTPC Renewable Energy (NTPC REL) has issued an engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) tender for a grid-connected 250 MW/1,000 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) at its Bikaner Solar Project in Rajasthan.

The deadline for bid submission is March 11, 2026, with bids scheduled to be opened on the same day. Interested bidders must submit an earnest money deposit of Rs 200 million (~$2.21 million).

The project involves deploying a single-cycle, four-hour discharge BESS. While the contracted capacity is 1,000 MWh, the system must have a minimum installed battery capacity of 1,100 MWh to account for performance guarantees and degradation over the project’s operational life.

The storage system will be connected to the plant’s existing 33 kV network, with provisions for reactive power support up to the 220 kV and 400 kV interstate transmission system (ISTS). Power injection will take place at the ISTS substation, while the contractor’s scope will terminate at the owner’s 33 kV pooling switchgear.

The EPC scope covers detailed design and engineering, supply of major and auxiliary equipment, installation, testing, commissioning, and seamless integration of the BESS with both the solar facility and the grid. This includes the deployment of energy management systems, battery management systems, power conversion systems, fire detection and suppression systems, auxiliary infrastructure, and all balance-of-plant works.

Beyond EPC execution, the selected contractor will be responsible for providing comprehensive operation and maintenance services for 15 years. The BESS must be engineered for a 25-year design life, with batteries capable of delivering at least 10,000 charge–discharge cycles. During the O&M period, the system must retain a minimum of 92% of the guaranteed dispatchable capacity.

Eligibility criteria require bidders to demonstrate experience in at least one of several qualifying categories, including battery manufacturing and supply, installation and commissioning of grid-interactive BESS, or EPC execution of grid-connected solar or wind power projects. In addition, bidders must report an average annual turnover of at least Rs 1.53 billion (~$16.92 million) over the past three financial years.
