Patel Engineering Secures ?230.70 Crore LOA for Pre-Construction Work of Bhutan’s 1,125 MW Dorjilung Hydro Project

Mar 21, 2026

Patel Engineering has received a Letter of Award (LOA) worth Rs 230.70 crore from Dorjilung Hydro Power for pre-construction activities of the 1,125 MW Dorjilung Hydroelectric Power Project in Bhutan. Dorjilung Hydro Power is a joint venture between Druk Green Power Corporation and Tata Power. The project represents Bhutan’s largest hydropower initiative under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model, aimed at strengthening the country’s domestic electricity supply while enabling exports of surplus clean energy to India.

Under Package I, Patel Engineering will undertake civil and hydromechanical works for the hydropower project. The work includes:

  • Constructing two diversion tunnels with a diameter of 11 meters and lengths of 930 meters and 821 meters
  • An intermediate adit with a finished diameter of 7 meters and length of 116 meters
  • A highway road tunnel with a D-shaped cross-section measuring 11 meters by 7.5 meters and extending 500 meters
  • Hydromechanical installations, including four sets of vertical lift fixed wheel gates, which are critical for water flow control within the hydropower system

The construction period is set at 300 days, followed by a defects notification period of one year. The project site is located about 7 km from Autsho town in Mongar Dzongkhag, making it a major infrastructure development in eastern Bhutan.

The Dorjilung Hydroelectric Power Project is expected to play a key role in Bhutan’s renewable energy expansion and cross-border electricity trade. Hydropower continues to be a cornerstone of the country’s economy, with electricity exports forming a major part of energy cooperation with India.

According to Kavita Shirvaikar, this project highlights Patel Engineering’s expertise in hydropower infrastructure and strengthens its long-term collaboration with Bhutan. The company also stated that it is exploring additional hydropower opportunities in Bhutan and neighboring countries, reinforcing its strategy to expand its presence in sustainable energy infrastructure across the region.
