PM Modi Announces 10 New Nuclear Reactors, Push for Energy Independence by 2047
Aug 16, 2025
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in his Independence Day address, highlighted India’s ambitious nuclear energy reforms aimed at achieving energy independence and reducing reliance on imported oil and gas. He announced that work is underway on 10 new nuclear reactors, with a goal to increase nuclear power capacity more than tenfold by 2047 as part of the Viksit Bharat 2047 vision.
Key reforms include opening the nuclear power sector to private participation for the first time. To facilitate this, amendments are being prepared to the Atomic Energy Act and the Civil Liability for Nuclear Damage Act, both of which were earlier designed around state-controlled projects. The move is expected to draw investment and speed up clean energy deployment.
PM Modi underlined that energy self-reliance is critical for the future of India’s youth, farmers, and economy. He also noted that India has already achieved its clean energy target of sourcing 50% of power from renewable and low-carbon sources by 2025—five years ahead of schedule. Over the past 11 years, solar capacity has grown 30 times, hydropower development has accelerated with new dams, and India has begun major investments in green hydrogen.
The reforms signal India’s shift towards nuclear, solar, hydro, and hydrogen as pillars of its clean energy transition.
