Power Ministry Extends RCO Compliance Deadline to May 31, 2026

Apr 18, 2026

The Ministry of Power has extended the deadline for submitting Renewable Consumption Obligation (RCO) compliance data for the financial year 2024–25 to May 31, 2026. The decision comes after multiple requests from obligated entities that cited difficulties in meeting the earlier deadline.

The revised timeline replaces the previous cutoff of March 31, 2026, and applies to designated consumers required to meet renewable energy consumption targets and report their compliance under the existing regulatory framework.

The RCO framework was introduced through a notification issued in October 2023, with the Bureau of Energy Efficiency acting as the nodal agency responsible for monitoring and facilitating compliance. Designated consumers, typically large industrial and commercial energy users, must adhere to these norms as part of efforts to increase renewable energy adoption and reduce reliance on conventional power sources.

Under the policy, designated consumers are expected to achieve a total renewable energy consumption target of 43.33% by the financial year 2030. The requirement includes specific contributions from different energy sources, such as wind, hydropower, distributed renewable energy, and other renewable categories.

The targets include 3.48% from wind energy, 1.33% from hydropower, 4.5% from distributed renewable sources, and 34.02% from other renewable energy segments. Any shortfall in one category may be adjusted using surplus from other components, as permitted under the framework.

Earlier in the year, the Bureau of Energy Efficiency also released draft operational procedures to guide designated consumers in meeting their RCO obligations.
