POWERGRID Secures ISTS Project to Enable 2.7 GW Renewable Integration
Apr 06, 2026
Power Grid Corporation of India (POWERGRID) has emerged as the winning bidder for PFC Consulting’s tender to develop an interstate transmission system (ISTS) aimed at supporting the evacuation of 2.7 GW of renewable energy. The project focuses on strengthening the network around the Tumkur-II substation in Karnataka.
The tender, issued in November 2025, attracted multiple participants, including Dilip Buildcon, Resonia, Adani Energy Solutions, and G R Infraprojects. With this win, POWERGRID will take on the responsibility of executing the project on a comprehensive basis, covering design, engineering, construction, testing, and long-term operation and maintenance.
As part of the project scope, POWERGRID will upgrade the Tumkur-II pooling station by adding multiple 400/220 kV interconnecting transformers with significant capacity. It will also develop a high-capacity 400 kV double-circuit transmission line between Tumkur-II and Madhugiri, along with installing advanced grid support equipment such as a static synchronous compensator to enhance system stability.
The project further includes the creation of additional line bays to connect renewable energy developers, along with associated infrastructure such as substations and switching systems. POWERGRID will also handle land acquisition, regulatory approvals, financing, and overall project management, ensuring timely execution.
The transmission system is expected to be completed within 24 months and will play a crucial role in integrating large-scale renewable energy into the grid, strengthening power evacuation infrastructure, and supporting India’s clean energy expansion goals.
