Suman Chandra, Director , MNRE highlights India’s shift towards a low-carbon, renewable energy-driven economy at Regional Workshop in Jaipur

Jan 22, 2025

At the Urja Manthan event, Director Suman Chandra emphasized India's shift to a low-carbon economy, showcasing bold renewable energy targets and policies by states. Key discussions highlighted Renewable Purchase Obligations (RPOs) as crucial for economic and sustainable energy growth.

A significant discussion revolved around Renewable Purchase Obligations (RPOs). It was clear that adopting RPOs is not only an economic and financial necessity, but a strategic step toward a sustainable energy future.

Maharashtra’s PM KUSUM Journey:

Under the leadership of ACS Energy Abha Shukla and DISCOM CMD Shri Lokesh Chandra, Maharashtra shared how they are overcoming key barriers to solar development:

  1. Land Availability: Identified 40,000 acres of government land within 3 months, optimizing proximity to substations.
  2. Fast-Tracking Permissions: Over 6,000 NOCs and grid connectivity permissions expedited through advance clearances.
  3. Developer Data Access: Launched a GIS-based data room with geo-tagged land and substation details for developers.
  4. Financial Security: Introduced a revolving fund mechanism and deemed generation provisions to prevent payment delays.
  5. Structural Innovation: Created the Maha Agro Solar Company and 22 SPVs for streamlined project execution.

Maharashtra also introduced a single-window portal to track projects in real time, significantly easing the development process.

Innovations from Madhya Pradesh:

Under Manu Srivastava’s leadership, Madhya Pradesh presented groundbreaking solutions, including:

  1. Shifting Point of Injection: Addressing transformer overloads to enhance grid capacity.
  2. Concurrent Solar Power Supply: Ensuring uninterrupted solar power supply to farmers.
  3. Project Capacity Optimization: Aligning capacity with transformer limits for optimal energy distribution.

Rajasthan’s People-Centric Approach:

Rajasthan, under ACS Alok Kumar, is pushing for 18 GW of decentralized renewable energy, becoming a model for empowering local communities and ensuring energy access at the grassroots level.

PM Suryaghar Initiative:

The PM Suryaghar scheme aims to provide end-to-end solutions, helping farmers and consumers alike benefit from India’s ambitious renewable energy targets.

The discussions at Urja Manthan reaffirmed the collective commitment of India’s states to drive clean energy adoption, embrace innovation, and create an ecosystem that fosters sustainable growth. Together, we’re paving the way toward a low-carbon future!
