Tata Capital Secures USD 16 Million GCF Funding to Strengthen India’s Climate-Tech Start-up Ecosystem

Nov 08, 2025

Tata Capital, the flagship financial services arm of the Tata Group, has joined hands with the Green Climate Fund (GCF) under its newly approved BEACON INDIA Programme to accelerate the growth of early-stage climate-tech start-ups across the country.

The programme is being implemented in collaboration with the Small Industries Development Bank of India (SIDBI) and TREC-STEP, an innovation and entrepreneurship development organization.

As part of this partnership, Tata Capital will receive a revolving facility of USD 15.85 million from the GCF, along with an additional USD 3 million grant aimed at making financing more accessible for climate-focused start-ups. The revolving model ensures sustained support—once start-ups repay their loans, the funds are reinvested to back new ventures, creating a continuous cycle of growth.

Demonstrating strong commitment, Tata Capital will also contribute USD 47.6 million of its own funds to the initiative. The program is projected to help reduce over 1.1 million tonnes of CO? emissions and positively impact nearly 2.9 million people through climate adaptation and mitigation efforts.

Rajiv Sabharwal, Managing Director & CEO of Tata Capital, commented, “Tata Capital has always been committed to green initiatives for a sustainable future. Our collaboration with the Green Climate Fund marks another step toward strengthening India’s climate innovation ecosystem. Through this programme, we aim to help emerging entrepreneurs scale their green technologies and make a measurable impact on people and the planet.”

After becoming the first private-sector company in India to collaborate with GCF in 2019 for rooftop solar financing, Tata Capital has now achieved another milestone—becoming the first Indian entity to partner with GCF on two distinct climate programmes.
