Tata Power Activates 400 kV Koteshwar–Rishikesh Line, Enabling 1,000 MW Hydropower Supply to North India

Dec 10, 2025

Tata Power has commissioned the 400 kV Koteshwar–Rishikesh transmission line, a vital infrastructure link that will facilitate the evacuation of 1,000 MW of hydropower from the Tehri–Koteshwar generation complex in Uttarakhand to several northern states and Union Territories.

The project was implemented under NRSS XXXVI Transmission Ltd., which is owned by Resurgent Power Ventures Pvt. Ltd.—a joint venture backed by Tata Power, ICICI Bank Limited, and global investors.

The newly energized transmission line will help deliver clean hydropower not only to Uttarakhand but also to Haryana, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh, Delhi, and Chandigarh. This enhancement is expected to significantly bolster grid reliability and energy security across the northern region.

Built across difficult Himalayan terrain in the New Tehri and Dehradun districts, the project involved construction at elevations surpassing 1,816 meters. Execution required exceptional engineering capabilities, including moving materials through head-loading in remote high-altitude locations and strictly complying with environmental norms in forested stretches.

According to the company, more than 500 skilled workers completed the project’s physical construction in just one year—from November 2024 to December 2025—following land clearance for 103 hectares.

This commissioning marks the third major milestone under the NRSS XXXVI project. Earlier components included the 400 kV LILO Sikar–Neemrana Double Circuit segment (3.1 circuit km) and the 400 kV LILO Babai–Bhiwani Double Circuit segment (222 circuit km).

With the addition of this line, Tata Power’s transmission portfolio now stands at 7,083 circuit kilometers that are either operational or under execution across India.
