Tata Power Eyes 20–50 MW Small Modular Nuclear Projects After Legal Reforms
Dec 16, 2025
Tata Power is evaluating the development of small modular nuclear reactor (SMR) projects with capacities ranging from 20 MW to 50 MW, once regulatory changes allow private sector participation in India’s nuclear power segment, according to a senior company executive.
Speaking during an interaction, Tata Power CEO and Managing Director Praveer Sinha said the company has already begun identifying potential locations as part of its long-term nuclear energy roadmap.
The government on Monday introduced the Sustainable Harnessing and Advancement of Nuclear Energy for Transforming India (SHANTI) Bill in the Lok Sabha. The proposed legislation aims to revamp India’s civil nuclear framework by enabling private investment and introducing a revised liability structure to address industry concerns. The Bill was tabled by Minister of State in the Prime Minister’s Office Jitendra Singh.
Sinha noted that the anticipated legal amendments could unlock significant opportunities in the nuclear energy space. He added that once the final details of the reforms are clear, Tata Power will assess viable business prospects, with small modular reactors emerging as a key area of interest.
Separately, Tata Power announced that it is targeting a capital expenditure of Rs 25,000 crore in the current financial year and plans to sustain a similar level of annual investment through FY30.
