Vedanta Aluminium Expands Lanjigarh Refinery Capacity to 5 MTPA
Dec 17, 2025
Vedanta Aluminium has increased the production capacity of its Lanjigarh alumina refinery to 5 million tonnes per annum (MTPA), marking a major milestone in India’s aluminium sector. The expansion elevates the facility from a 2 MTPA greenfield plant to the country’s largest single-location alumina refinery and strengthens India’s domestic aluminium value chain.
With the latest scale-up, the Lanjigarh refinery has emerged as the world’s second-largest alumina refinery outside China. The expansion has lifted India’s total alumina refining capacity to nearly 13 MTPA, reinforcing the country’s position as the third-largest alumina producer globally. The Lanjigarh complex alone now accounts for around 38 percent of India’s total alumina output.
The capacity expansion aligns with Vedanta Aluminium’s strategy to build a globally competitive aluminium ecosystem in India, as demand continues to rise across infrastructure, automotive and electric mobility, renewable energy, construction, railways, and aerospace sectors.
Alongside the capacity milestone, the refinery recorded its highest-ever monthly alumina production in November at 254 kilotonnes, reflecting an eight percent increase over the previous month and a 68 percent jump year-on-year. The strong performance was supported by improved operational efficiencies, including the handling of over 700 rakes in a single month, the lowest specific power consumption in the past 20 months, and conversion costs reduced to an 18-month low through process optimisation and resource efficiency initiatives.
Rajiv Kumar, CEO of Vedanta Aluminium, said aluminium remains a strategic material for India’s industrial growth and self-reliance goals. He noted that scaling the Lanjigarh refinery to 5 MTPA represents both a capacity milestone and a step towards building a resilient, world-class aluminium value chain. He added that record production levels highlight the company’s focus on responsible resource development, innovation, and long-term value creation.
The Lanjigarh refinery began operations as a 2 MTPA greenfield project and initiated its phased expansion in 2020. Beyond industrial growth, Vedanta Aluminium continues to invest in community development programmes, supporting education, healthcare, sports, and skill development to ensure inclusive and sustainable progress.
