ABB Ships First India-Built Wind Power Converter, Marking Milestone in Local Renewable Manufacturing

Jan 20, 2026

ABB has dispatched its first wind power converter manufactured in India, following the company’s acquisition of Gamesa Electric’s power electronics business in December 2025. The unit was produced at ABB’s advanced manufacturing facility in Nelamangala and supplied to a wind turbine original equipment manufacturer (OEM), marking a significant step in ABB’s renewable energy expansion both in India and internationally.

The delivery brings Gamesa Electric’s established wind energy conversion technologies into ABB’s product portfolio and aligns with India’s Atmanirbhar Bharat vision and the Make in India programme. With this addition, ABB’s renewable energy offerings now include domestically produced wind power converters, utility-scale solar inverters, and power conversion systems for battery energy storage applications.

Commenting on the development, Anoop Anand, President – Motion High Power Division, ABB India Ltd., said that wind energy plays a critical role in the global energy transition. He noted that the delivery of locally manufactured, grid-compatible power conversion solutions will support the accelerated deployment of wind energy in India and overseas markets. Anand also highlighted that the milestone strengthens India’s position as an emerging global centre for renewable energy manufacturing and deployment.

India is currently the world’s third-largest wind manufacturing base and is projected to cater to around 10 percent of global wind equipment demand. The country is also targeting an installed wind power capacity of 107 GW by 2030. ABB stated that the acquisition has further enhanced its renewable power conversion capabilities, expanding its global serviceable installed base of wind converters by approximately 46 GW—nearly one-fifth of India’s existing renewable energy capacity.

According to the company, ABB has supplied more than 60,000 wind converters and generators worldwide over the past 15 years. The company continues to offer end-to-end, utility-scale power solutions across wind, solar, and battery energy storage systems, reinforcing its long-term commitment to the renewable energy sector.
