Asia-Led Expansion Puts Global Wind Power Capacity on Track to Surpass 2 TW by 2030: GWEC
Jan 22, 2026
Global wind power capacity is projected to cross the 2 terawatt (TW) milestone by the end of the decade, supported by record-breaking installations and accelerated growth across Asian markets, according to the latest outlook released by the Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC).
GWEC reported that 2025 is set to be the strongest year on record for wind energy, with new installations expected to reach 150 GW worldwide. This figure represents an 8.8 percent increase, or 13.3 GW, over previous projections, reflecting faster-than-anticipated deployment, particularly across the Asia-Pacific region.
Asia emerged as the primary growth engine during the year. India registered its highest-ever annual wind capacity addition of 6.3 GW, while Europe added 16.5 GW, nearly 5 GW more than in 2024. In the United States, installations are expected to exceed 7 GW, while China is on track to surpass 100 GW of new wind capacity in a single year, with 89 GW already installed by November 2025.
Looking ahead, GWEC highlighted that Asia-Pacific markets excluding China are expected to contribute around 12 percent of global wind installations by 2030. Countries such as Vietnam, Australia, and the Philippines are rapidly expanding wind capacity to meet rising electricity demand and support sustained economic growth.
The council also noted a growing alignment between wind energy deployment and GDP growth, particularly in emerging economies. As nations work to balance economic expansion with climate commitments, wind power is increasingly being adopted as a key solution to reduce emissions, strengthen energy security, and support long-term sustainable development.
