Batteries and Supply Chains: Pillars of the Clean Energy Transition
Jan 25, 2025
The clean energy revolution depends heavily on batteries and their supply chains. To address the challenges in this sector, the World Economic Forum, Rocky Mountain Institute, and Global Battery Alliance have released a pivotal report titled “Powering the Future: Overcoming Battery Supply Chain Challenges with Circularity.”
The report highlights critical concerns in the current electric vehicle battery (EVB) value chain and proposes five key priorities to move towards a circular battery economy:
- Standardized Track-and-Trace Platforms: Establishing interoperable platforms to enhance transparency and accountability across the battery lifecycle.
- Performance and Design Innovation Standards: Promoting R&D to improve battery designs for disassembly and recyclability while ensuring safety, affordability, and range.
- Targeted Recycling and Second-Life Policies: Addressing economic and technical challenges through policy interventions to boost recycling and repurposing efforts.
- Regional Circular Value Chains: Developing localized circular value chains while enabling responsible global trade of batteries and raw materials.
- Workforce Development for a Circular Economy: Investing in reskilling workers, integrating informal markets, and ensuring a just transition for jobs in the circular battery ecosystem.
This comprehensive approach underlines the importance of innovation, collaboration, and policy support to overcome supply chain challenges and enable a sustainable, circular battery economy for the clean energy transition.
