China Takes the Lead in Renewables with Record-Breaking Installations in 2024
Jan 25, 2025
As USA scale back their renewable energy commitments, China continues to surge ahead, cementing its position as a global leader in renewable energy. The latest 2024 figures reveal China's remarkable achievements in wind and solar energy installations, breaking its own records yet again.
In 2024, China installed an unprecedented 275 GW of new solar capacity. This figure is nearly double the total solar capacity installed in the United States to date. With this achievement, China now boasts an incredible 886.67 GW of installed solar power, compared to the United States’ 139 GW as of 2023.
Wind power also saw significant growth in China, with capacity reaching 520 GW, marking an 18% increase. Together, China’s installed solar and wind energy capacities now rival the country’s coal capacity—a monumental shift in its energy landscape.
Solar power alone is on track to surpass coal in the near future, signaling a major milestone in China's transition to clean energy. These advancements align with China's commitment to meeting its Paris Agreement climate goals ahead of schedule—by as much as five years.
While USA roll back policies that support renewables and electric vehicles, China’s leadership in the sector serves as a beacon of hope. The nation’s determination to tackle climate change and invest in a sustainable future is evident in these groundbreaking achievements.
