Delhi Strengthens Renewable Energy Push with New Rooftop Solar Project in Dwarka

The Delhi government has intensified its efforts to promote clean energy by expanding rooftop solar installations across the national capital, reinforcing its commitment to reducing carbon emissions, improving energy efficiency and encouraging sustainable urban development. The initiative is expected to help households lower electricity expenses while supporting India's broader renewable energy goals.

Chief Minister Rekha Gupta inaugurated a 500-kilowatt rooftop solar power plant at the Air Force and Naval Officers Enclave in Dwarka Sector-7, describing the project as an important milestone in Delhi's transition towards cleaner sources of electricity. The installation is part of the government's larger plan to increase the share of renewable energy in the city's power mix and reduce reliance on conventional fossil fuel-based generation.

Speaking at the inauguration, Gupta highlighted the growing importance of rooftop solar systems in strengthening India's energy security and achieving long-term sustainability. She said the Delhi government is working alongside the Central government's PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana to encourage residential consumers to adopt solar power by providing financial incentives that can collectively exceed Rs 1 lakh, depending on system capacity and eligibility.

Officials believe that greater adoption of rooftop solar will not only reduce monthly electricity bills for consumers but also ease pressure on the power distribution network during peak demand periods. Solar installations generate electricity at the point of consumption, helping reduce transmission losses while contributing to a cleaner and more resilient electricity system.

India has significantly accelerated its renewable energy expansion in recent years, with rooftop solar emerging as a key component of the country's clean energy strategy. The PM Surya Ghar initiative aims to promote rooftop solar installations across millions of households by offering subsidies, simplified application procedures and greater consumer awareness. The programme is expected to increase distributed renewable energy generation while creating employment opportunities in solar manufacturing, installation and maintenance.

The Delhi government's latest initiative also aligns with its wider sustainability agenda, which includes promoting electric mobility, improving energy efficiency and reducing urban air pollution. Alongside rooftop solar expansion, the proposed Delhi EV Policy 2026 seeks to accelerate electric vehicle adoption, strengthen charging infrastructure and support the capital's transition towards a low-carbon economy.

With projects such as the Dwarka rooftop solar plant, Delhi is seeking to expand clean energy infrastructure while supporting national climate objectives. The government expects that increased participation from residential communities, housing societies and institutions will play a crucial role in achieving long-term energy security and building a more sustainable future for the city.
