GAIL (India) Ltd. Approves 178 MW Wind Project in Maharashtra with INR 1,736 Crore Outlay

Mar 02, 2026

GAIL (India) Ltd. has cleared an investment of approximately Rs 1,736.25 crore for the development of a 178.2 MW greenfield wind power project in Maharashtra. The move forms part of the company’s broader strategy to expand its renewable energy portfolio and drive long-term sustainable growth.

The proposal received approval from GAIL’s Board of Directors during a meeting held on February 27, 2026. As per the company’s regulatory filing, the project will be financed through a combination of debt and equity. The planned capacity is expected to be commissioned within 24 months from the award of the Lump Sum Turnkey (LSTK) contract.

Strengthening Renewable Portfolio

Currently, GAIL operates 117.95 MW of renewable energy capacity, which is running at full utilisation. In addition, the company has 27 MW of operational solar power capacity. The upcoming 178.2 MW wind installation will substantially enhance its clean energy footprint.

Net Zero Roadmap

GAIL has outlined ambitious decarbonisation targets, aiming to achieve Net Zero emissions for Scope-1 and Scope-2 by 2035, and Scope-3 emissions by 2040. To support these objectives, the company plans to scale up its renewable energy capacity to 3.4 GW by 2035.

The new wind project represents a key step in advancing GAIL’s transition toward a more sustainable and diversified energy portfolio.
