GreenCell Mobility Introduces 75 Electric Buses in Puducherry to Advance Clean Public Transport
Mar 03, 2026
GreenCell Mobility has rolled out 75 electric buses in Puducherry, marking a significant step toward strengthening zero-emission public transportation in the Union Territory. The deployment aligns with Puducherry’s broader clean mobility agenda and was recently highlighted during a government event attended by Narendra Modi.
Under the project, GreenCell is inducting 25 nine-metre and 50 twelve-metre air-conditioned electric city buses. These vehicles are designed with higher battery capacities to meet the operational needs of both standard and trunk routes in Puducherry. The company has partnered with EKA Mobility for the supply and deployment of the buses.
The new fleet will operate from the Mettupalayam Bus Depot, enhancing last-mile connectivity and improving the reliability and efficiency of public transport services across key corridors. The electric buses are expected to significantly cut tailpipe emissions while ensuring smoother and more dependable operations on trunk and feeder routes.
Each bus is equipped with advanced features such as an Integrated Transport Management System (ITMS), passenger information systems, real-time vehicle tracking, internal and rear-view cameras, and infrastructure designed for differently abled passengers. These additions aim to promote safer, more accessible, and technology-driven commuting experiences.
Commenting on the launch, Devndra Chawla, Managing Director and CEO of GreenCell Mobility, stated that the Puducherry project reflects the company’s commitment to building sustainable public transport ecosystems across India’s growing urban centres, supported by strong policy backing and institutional capital.
Beyond Puducherry, GreenCell is executing major electric bus projects across multiple states, including Uttar Pradesh, Surat, Madhya Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka, and Delhi. The company also operates 50 intercity electric buses for Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC), strengthening its presence in both city and intercity segments.
Backed by Eversource Capital, GreenCell Mobility currently runs a fleet of over 1,200 electric buses supported by more than 270 charging stations nationwide. Through its intercity brand NueGo, the company operates over 300 premium electric coaches connecting more than 100 destinations, further expanding its footprint in India’s zero-emission mobility landscape.
