Honda Motor has acquired an equity stake in OMC Power, a leading distributed power and mini-grid company, to collaborate on developing clean energy storage systems using repurposed electric vehicle (EV) batteries.

While the financial details of the investment remain undisclosed, the partnership aims to advance innovative business models focused on battery reuse and sustainable energy storage within the electric mobility ecosystem.

The collaboration is part of Honda and OMC’s shared vision to expand a 1 GW clean energy portfolio, combining OMC’s expertise in distributed power with Honda’s technological innovation in energy systems.

As part of this initiative, OMC Power will launch a UPS leasing business in January 2026, powered by the Honda Mobile Power Pack e: — a portable, swappable battery developed by Honda. Honda Power Pack Energy India, which provides battery-sharing services, will supply these power packs to OMC for integration into its UPS systems.

The new UPS devices will be leased to households, small enterprises, educational institutions, and other facilities, enabling users to access uninterrupted electricity. The batteries will charge from the grid when power is available and supply electricity during outages or instability, improving energy reliability in underserved regions.

This partnership will focus on repurposing Honda’s detachable batteries, originally designed for electric two- and three-wheelers, into storage-based clean energy solutions. Since 2023, the two companies have been testing these UPS devices using Honda’s Mobile Power Pack e: in Uttar Pradesh, providing stable power to remote schools, healthcare centers, telecom towers, small businesses, and rooftop solar systems.

Minoru Kato, Executive Officer and Chief Officer of Motorcycle and Power Products Operations at Honda Motor, said the company aims to build a resource-circulating value chain by reusing end-of-life EV batteries for sustainable applications.

The collaboration will also strengthen OMC’s four core business segments—rooftop hybrid solar solutions, energy storage for telecom infrastructure, solar systems for commercial and industrial clients, and mini-grid technologies.

In 2024, OMC Power won 10 MW in the Uttar Pradesh New and Renewable Energy Development Agency’s (UPNEDA) auction to install 500 MW of grid-connected rooftop solar projects across government and semi-government buildings, including over 200 hospitals and medical colleges.

OMC Power’s innovative approach to battery reuse was recognized at the 5th Annual Mercom India Awards, where it received the Best Off-Grid Project Award for its repurposed EV battery-based inverter solution designed to enhance rural energy access.
