The Indian Sugar and Bio-Energy Manufacturers Association (ISMA) has expressed strong support for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent address in Parliament, where he emphasized the importance of biofuels in enhancing India’s energy security amid rising geopolitical tensions and fluctuations in global crude oil markets.

Highlighting the country’s preparedness, the Prime Minister noted significant progress in building strategic petroleum reserves and expanding refining capacity over the past decade. He also underscored the rapid advancement in ethanol blending, which has grown from around 1?ecadeago to nearly 20% today. This increase has helped India reduce its crude oil imports substantially, including savings of approximately 4.5 crore barrels in the past year.

ISMA stated that these developments reinforce its long-standing advocacy for biofuels as a critical component of India’s energy strategy. The association pointed out that ethanol blending has accelerated significantly, moving from low levels in 2014 to achieving the 20% target ahead of schedule.

According to ISMA, India now has a robust domestic ethanol production capacity exceeding the requirements for current blending targets. This positions the country to move towards higher blending levels such as E22–E27 and expand the adoption of flex-fuel vehicles capable of running on higher ethanol mixes.

The association believes that continued progress in biofuels will not only reduce dependence on imported crude but also generate substantial foreign exchange savings and support India’s long-term goal of energy self-reliance.
