TERI Reintroduces Biomass Gasifier as Low-Cost Alternative to LPG for Bulk Cooking
Apr 13, 2026
The Energy and Resources Institute has revived its biomass gasifier technology to provide a cost-effective and cleaner substitute for LPG in large-scale cooking, addressing concerns over rising fuel prices and supply uncertainties.
Originally developed in 1995, the biomass gasifier converts agricultural waste and wood chips into a clean combustible gas through thermochemical processes. The upgraded system is now being positioned for institutional and community kitchens, helping reduce reliance on fossil fuels like LPG.
As part of its demonstration efforts, TERI has installed a 10 kW thermal gasifier at its TERI Retreat campus, where it is currently used to prepare meals for around 300 people ?????????. The system, set up at an approximate cost of Rs1.2 lakh, consumes about 10 kg of biomass per hour, with fuel costing nearly Rs5 per kg—highlighting its affordability and scalability for bulk cooking applications.
Over the years, TERI has deployed biomass gasifier systems across multiple sectors, including food processing, small industries, and community services. These systems have consistently delivered fuel savings of 40–50 percent while also lowering carbon emissions and improving operational efficiency.
With India heavily dependent on LPG imports, recent global supply challenges have reinforced the need for alternative cooking solutions. Biomass gasification offers a practical pathway by utilizing locally available agricultural residues, reducing costs, and supporting a more sustainable and circular energy ecosystem.
