Karnataka Boosts Rooftop Solar Adoption with 14,151 Installations under PM Surya Ghar Scheme

Dec 05, 2025

Karnataka’s rooftop solar expansion continues to gather pace, with 14,151 systems installed under the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, benefitting 22,313 households across the state.

The update was shared in the Rajya Sabha by Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy Pralhad Joshi, who also noted that Karnataka’s cumulative renewable energy capacity has reached 25,675.39 MW as of October 31, 2025. This accounts for 10.24 percent of India’s total installed renewable capacity of 2,50,643.45 MW.

At the national level, the PM Surya Ghar programme has so far supported 18.72 lakh rooftop solar installations, delivering clean power to 23.47 lakh households. While Karnataka remains a strong contributor, progress in Belagavi district has been slower—with only 681 commissioned systems out of 25,778 applications.

To accelerate the mission’s goal of achieving one crore rooftop solar installations by 2026–27, the Centre has rolled out several supportive measures. These include a completely online application and subsidy workflow, collateral-free loans at a concessional 6 percent interest rate, streamlined regulatory approvals, automatic load enhancement up to 10 kW, and reforms in vendor registration. More than 20,000 vendors are currently empanelled, and around 1.5 lakh individuals have received training to strengthen the implementing workforce.

Public awareness drives through print, radio, and television are underway, alongside regular state- and DISCOM-level reviews to remove bottlenecks. To further assist consumers, a multilingual helpline (15555) has been established for queries and grievance redressal.

In a separate update, the Centre has released Rs351.94 crore for the development of the 2,000 MW Pavagada Solar Park, which has been fully operational since December 2019. Karnataka has clarified that it has no plans to set up additional solar or wind parks in the northern region, including Belagavi district.
