Maxeon and Aiko Reach Global Licensing Deal for Back-Contact Solar Technology

Feb 09, 2026

Maxeon Solar Technologies and Shanghai Aiko Solar Energy have entered into a formal patent licensing arrangement covering Maxeon’s back-contact (BC) solar cell and module technologies, marking a significant step toward resolving intellectual property matters between the two companies.

Under the terms of the agreement, Aiko will receive a license to use all of Maxeon’s BC solar cell and module patents outside the United States for a period of five years. The license includes both existing patents and any new BC-related patents that may be added during the agreement term, the companies said in a joint statement.

As part of the settlement, Maxeon has agreed to withdraw and discontinue all current and potential patent enforcement actions against Aiko. In return, Aiko will cease and terminate any ongoing or prospective challenges seeking to invalidate Maxeon’s patents.

The companies noted that the agreement reflects mutual recognition of the importance of intellectual property rights and is expected to support stronger IP protection while encouraging continued innovation and technological progress across the global solar industry.
