MNRE Mandates Immediate SCADA-Based Remote Control Systems for Wind Turbines Near IAF Airfields

Dec 13, 2025

The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) has issued a formal directive requiring wind project developers to urgently install SCADA-based remote control systems for wind turbine generators (WTGs) located near Indian Air Force (IAF)–designated airfields.

The directive follows concerns raised by the IAF regarding delays in the deployment of these systems, which are critical for managing wind turbines that may interfere with Air Defence Radar operations. According to MNRE, the absence of operational remote control mechanisms poses potential risks during sensitive defence activities.

As outlined in the notification, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) mandates that WTGs receiving No Objection Certificates (NOCs) for wind and solar projects must be capable of remote shutdown during wartime, emergency situations, or critical operational periods. This requirement is aimed at preventing Doppler radar signatures from wind turbines that could create false radar tracks resembling aircraft movement.

To meet these conditions, MNRE has instructed that SCADA-based remote control systems be fully installed and functional at all relevant IAF airfields. The Ministry has categorised the directive as “Top Priority”, emphasising the urgency of compliance.

MNRE has also warned that failure to implement the required systems could result in the revocation of MoD-issued NOCs, which would effectively halt the operation of affected wind projects. The notice noted that, despite multiple reminders, several developers have yet to issue work orders for SCADA system installation.

Wind project developers have been asked to initiate immediate action and submit a detailed implementation timeline to MNRE at the earliest. The Ministry cautioned that continued non-compliance or lack of response may lead to cancellation of defence clearances for the concerned projects.
