Montra Electric, the clean mobility brand of the Murugappa Group, has commenced commercial deliveries of its Rhino 5538 EV heavy-duty electric truck by flagging off the first batch from its manufacturing facility in Manesar, Haryana. The rollout represents a significant milestone for India's commercial vehicle industry, signalling the transition from pilot deployments to large-scale adoption of electric trucks for freight transportation across key industrial sectors.

The Rhino 5538 EV has been developed for demanding logistics applications, including cement, steel, mining, construction materials, infrastructure, and other heavy-duty industries, where high vehicle utilization and operational reliability are critical. Designed to deliver lower operating costs while maintaining performance comparable to conventional diesel trucks, the vehicle combines an advanced electric powertrain with connected telematics and intelligent vehicle management systems to improve fleet efficiency and uptime.

According to the company, the first dispatch marks the initial phase of deliveries, with additional vehicles scheduled for deployment over the coming months. To support increasing customer demand, Montra Electric has expanded production at its Manesar facility while strengthening its after-sales service network and customer support ecosystem. The company expects the growing order pipeline to further accelerate the adoption of electric freight vehicles across major industrial corridors in India.

Industry experts note that the commercial vehicle market is witnessing a shift in customer priorities, with fleet operators increasingly evaluating electric trucks as a mainstream business solution rather than a pilot technology. Improvements in battery technology, charging infrastructure, total cost of ownership, and supportive government policies are encouraging logistics companies to transition towards zero-emission transportation while meeting sustainability targets and reducing long-term operating expenses.

Heavy-duty electric trucks are expected to play an increasingly important role in decarbonising India's transport sector, which accounts for a significant share of the country's greenhouse gas emissions and fossil fuel consumption. As businesses seek cleaner logistics solutions, electric commercial vehicles can help reduce carbon emissions, lower noise pollution, improve energy efficiency, and decrease dependence on imported petroleum fuels, particularly when powered by electricity generated from renewable energy sources.

The commercial rollout of the Rhino 5538 EV aligns with India's broader efforts to promote sustainable mobility through initiatives such as the PM E-Drive Scheme, state-level EV policies, and investments in charging infrastructure. With growing industrial demand, advancements in battery technology, and increased domestic manufacturing of electric vehicles and components, the heavy-duty EV segment is expected to become a key contributor to India's long-term objective of building a cleaner, more efficient, and self-reliant transportation ecosystem.
