Oil India Partners with CSIR-IMMT for Research in Critical Minerals

Apr 06, 2026

Oil India Limited (OIL) has entered into a strategic partnership with the CSIR–Institute of Minerals and Materials Technology (CSIR-IMMT) to advance research and development in the critical minerals sector. The collaboration has been formalized through a memorandum of understanding (MoU), aligning with national priorities in securing essential mineral resources.

CSIR-IMMT, recognized as a Centre of Excellence for Critical Minerals under the National Critical Mineral Mission (NCMM), will work closely with OIL to undertake joint R&D initiatives. The agreement is expected to strengthen capabilities in exploration, processing, and utilization of critical minerals, which are vital for emerging technologies and energy transition efforts.

The MoU was signed in the presence of senior leadership from both organizations, including top executives and scientific experts, highlighting the strategic importance of the collaboration. Through this partnership, both entities aim to contribute to India’s long-term resource security and technological advancement in the mineral sector.

This development builds on Oil India’s earlier efforts in the critical minerals space. In August 2025, the company had also signed an agreement with IREL (India) to explore opportunities in mining and processing mineral sands, including rare earth elements. Together, these initiatives signal a growing focus on strengthening domestic capabilities in critical mineral development.
