Polaris Smart Metering and Wirepas Accelerate India’s Smart Meter Deployment with Dual-Communication Technology
Dec 23, 2025
Polaris Smart Metering has reached a key milestone in India’s smart electricity metering programme, with one million smart meters now deployed in the field using a dual-communication architecture developed in close collaboration with Wirepas. The solution is live across multiple locations and has been designed to meet the stringent service-level requirements of large-scale utility deployments in the country.
The dual-communication model allows smart meters to dynamically switch between mesh and cellular connectivity, ensuring uninterrupted data transmission even when one communication path is congested or unavailable. This capability reduces data loss, improves billing accuracy, and enables utilities to consistently meet performance benchmarks as smart metering expands across urban centres, remote regions, and areas with mixed network infrastructure.
Commenting on the milestone, Manish C Swamie, Senior Vice President – Business Development at Polaris Smart Metering, said the deployment of one million meters marks a significant step in India’s energy transition. He noted that the collaboration with Wirepas demonstrates the scalability and reliability of the dual-communication approach, giving utilities confidence to expand smart metering programmes across challenging environments.
The solution is powered by the Wirepas Platform, a self-managing mesh networking technology in which smart meters collectively support data transmission across the network. By minimising reliance on fixed gateways, the platform enhances network resilience and ensures consistent performance as deployments scale over time.
Sebastian Pellorce, Senior Vice President – India Business at Wirepas, said the milestone validates the dual-communication concept announced earlier in the year. He added that seamless switching between mesh and cellular networks ensures dependable data delivery, helping utilities meet strict service-level agreements while simplifying large-scale rollouts. The partnership, he said, is strengthening the foundation for the next phase of India’s smart energy transformation.
Building on the current deployment, Polaris Smart Metering and Wirepas are preparing to roll out up to five million additional smart meters in the next phase, with an accelerated implementation timeline.
The collaboration also aligns with India’s ‘Make in India’ initiative through strong technical cooperation and local delivery, supporting the development of a smart metering infrastructure that is reliable, scalable, and sustainable over the long term.
