Wanxiang A123 Introduces Semi-Solid-State Storage Platform with Immersion Cooling Focused on Intrinsic Safety
Feb 10, 2026
Wanxiang A123 Systems Corp. has unveiled a next-generation energy storage platform that combines semi-solid-state battery technology with immersion cooling, marking a shift toward system-level safety and long-term reliability in energy storage applications.
The announcement was made at the company’s global launch event held at Wanxiang Innovation Energy City. Titled “Gathering Stars, Smart Storage Future,” the event highlighted Wanxiang A123’s move away from conventional fire suppression approaches toward intrinsic prevention embedded at the cell and system design levels.
At the launch, the company introduced its Star Series semi-solid-state battery cells alongside the Star River Series energy storage systems. The platform represents what Wanxiang A123 describes as the first deep integration of semi-solid-state cells with immersion cooling, setting a new reference point for thermal safety and operational stability in high-risk energy storage environments.
The Star Series cells are built on proprietary technologies designed to address electrolyte leakage and instability at the material level. During a widely demonstrated 10-needle puncture test, a 100 Ah semi-solid-state cell remained stable, showing no fire, explosion, or thermal propagation—performance that the company said is not achievable with traditional liquid lithium-ion batteries.
On the system side, the Star River Series employs full immersion cooling to tightly control operating temperatures, keeping cell temperature variation within 2 °C even under demanding conditions. By combining material-level stability with continuous thermal isolation, the platform creates a multi-layer safety mechanism that significantly reduces the risk of thermal runaway and enables reliable operation in harsh environments.
In addition to safety improvements, the platform delivers strong economic performance. Wanxiang A123 said the system offers a cycle life of more than 10,000 cycles at room temperature and over 7,000 cycles at 45 °C—around 40 percent higher than typical industry benchmarks. Enhanced high-temperature performance helps lower the Levelized Cost of Energy by about 15 percent, improving long-term cost efficiency for customers.
The Star River Series is designed to address four primary application segments. For data centres, the platform features an 800 V HVDC architecture capable of functioning as a primary power supply. Outdoor cabinet systems are built with IP68-rated protection for extreme environmental conditions. Modular 5-ft container solutions support offshore and logistics-constrained deployments, while 20-ft container systems incorporate multi-stage fire suppression and three-tier battery management system protection for utility-scale projects.
To further enhance operational intelligence, Wanxiang A123 also introduced a Wireless BMS integrated with AI and pressure-sensing technology. The system can detect thermal runaway risks up to 10 minutes earlier than conventional monitoring tools, enabling predictive safety management and supporting the shift toward unmanned and intelligent energy storage operations.
