Baltic States Synchronize Electricity Grids with Continental Europe

Feb 11, 2025

In a historic step for European energy security, Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia successfully synchronized their electricity grids with the Continental Europe Synchronous Area, marking their disconnection from the Russian-dominated BRELL energy ring. The transition, which took place over the weekend, strengthens the region’s energy independence and resilience.

During the shift, the Baltic states operated in island mode for over 24 hours, conducting frequency management tests. Fluence played a critical role in stabilizing Lithuania’s grid with its 200 MW Storage-as-Transmission-Assets portfolio, responding within 150 milliseconds to ensure smooth frequency regulation. The four 50 MW storage projects will continue providing grid support and enhancing energy security in the region.

The achievement was celebrated in a formal ceremony attended by the presidents of the Baltic nations and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, along with Fluence’s key representatives. Fluence remains committed to advancing energy security through cutting-edge storage technology and cybersecurity-driven solutions.
