ENGIE Wins 280 MW Battery Storage Project in Gujarat
Nov 22, 2025
ENGIE has secured 280 MW / 2-hour battery storage capacity in the latest Gujarat Urja Vikas Nigam Ltd. (GUVNL) auction, marking the company’s debut in India’s utility-scale energy storage segment and strengthening its position in the country’s expanding clean-energy ecosystem.
ENGIE confirmed that the award forms part of the 2 GW / 4 GWh national BESS tender, making it one of the largest battery storage allocations issued in India so far. With this development, the company’s total portfolio in India has grown to around 2.75 GW, underscoring its commitment to supporting India’s target of achieving 500 GW of clean energy capacity and building more firm, future-ready renewable power systems.
The project comes at a crucial juncture for India’s renewable energy transition. As wind and solar installations continue to expand rapidly, the need for large-scale storage systems capable of delivering power on demand and improving grid stability has become essential. The BESS capacity awarded to ENGIE through the GUVNL auction is expected to help manage peak electricity loads, enable smoother round-the-clock renewable integration, and aid in the next phase of grid modernisation across the country.
Globally, ENGIE aims to scale its renewable and storage capacity to 95 GW by 2030. The company already operates 55 GW, with an additional 6 GW under construction. This global depth of experience positions ENGIE strongly as it expands into India’s emerging storage market, offering technologically advanced and operationally proven clean-energy solutions.
Amit Jain, CEO and Country Manager for ENGIE India and Managing Director for Renewables & Batteries in India & Southeast Asia, stated that India is entering a pivotal stage in its renewable journey—one that demands not only scale but also firmness, flexibility and digital intelligence. He noted that energy storage serves as the “bridge” enabling this next phase. Jain added that the GUVNL award reinforces ENGIE’s mission to build hybrid and storage-backed infrastructure capable of meeting peak demand, integrating higher volumes of renewable power, and delivering reliable clean energy to millions.
