Govt Sets New Efficiency Benchmarks for Solar Inverters From January 2026

Nov 15, 2025

The Ministry of Power has introduced updated minimum efficiency standards for grid-connected solar inverters up to 100 kW, applicable to all units manufactured or imported from January 2026 to December 2027. Developed in collaboration with the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE), the guidelines apply to single-phase and three-phase non-storage inverters and are aligned with IS 17980:2022 and IEC 62891:2020 testing procedures.

The mandated efficiency levels range from 92% for inverters below 1 kW to 98% for models exceeding 20 kW, with no allowance for negative tolerance. Only inverters that meet these criteria will be eligible for the BEE endorsement label, which must be clearly displayed by manufacturers.

All products must also comply with BIS standards and undergo testing through accredited laboratories, including NABL, ILAC, APLAC, or NISE. The policy aims to improve equipment quality, boost system performance, and strengthen consumer confidence as India’s solar installations continue to expand.
