Honda Invests in OMC Power to Launch UPS Leasing Business Using Repurposed EV Batteries in India

Oct 30, 2025

Honda Motor has announced an investment in OMC Power, a distributed energy company in India, to promote renewable energy access and launch a UPS leasing business powered by repurposed Honda Mobile Power Pack e: batteries. The new initiative is set to begin in January 2026.

India’s rapid growth and large population have created rising energy demands, especially in regions facing unreliable electricity supply. Many of these areas depend on diesel generators, which contribute to pollution and health risks. Honda and OMC Power aim to provide a cleaner, battery-based alternative for backup power.

Since 2023, both companies have been conducting demonstration tests of UPS devices using Honda’s portable, swappable batteries in Uttar Pradesh. The trials confirmed that repurposed batteries from electric motorcycles can deliver reliable power while reducing environmental impact — leading to Honda’s decision to invest further in OMC Power.

Minoru Kato, Executive Officer at Honda Motor, said the initiative aligns with Honda’s goal of creating a resource-circulating value chain by reusing end-of-life electric motorcycle batteries. “Electrified mobility products can not only transform transportation but also enhance local energy systems and community resilience,” he noted.

Rohit Chandra, Co-Founder and CEO of OMC Power, added that the collaboration reflects the spirit of Make in India and Aatma Nirbhar Bharat, combining global expertise with local innovation to strengthen energy security and promote sustainable growth.

Under the new business model, Honda Power Pack Energy India (HEID) will supply the repurposed batteries, while OMC Power will integrate them with its UPS systems for leasing to households, small businesses, schools, and rural institutions. The system allows batteries to charge from the grid when power is available and supply energy during outages — ensuring uninterrupted, clean electricity for users.
