IEA Report Highlights Nuclear Power's Rising Role in Net Zero Future

Feb 01, 2025

The International Energy Agency’s (IEA) report, "The Path to a New Era for Nuclear Energy," emphasizes nuclear energy's growing significance in achieving net-zero targets. The report reveals that nuclear generation will reach an all-time high by 2025, with 63 reactors under construction, adding over 70 GW of capacity—the highest since 1990.

Investment in nuclear energy has surged by nearly 50% since 2020, exceeding USD 60 billion, but doubling to USD 120 billion by 2030 is necessary for rapid growth.

The report also highlights the transformative potential of Small Modular Reactors (SMRs). If construction costs of SMRs are reduced to match large-scale reactors, SMR adoption could rise by 60%, with a deployment target of 190 GW by 2050. This shift would foster cost-effective, scalable nuclear solutions critical for sustainable energy transitions.
