India and Canada Renew Energy Partnership, Targeting Expanded Trade and Clean Technology Cooperation

Jan 29, 2026

India and Canada have agreed to deepen cooperation across energy trade, investment, and clean technology following high-level discussions held on the sidelines of India Energy Week (IEW) 2026 in Goa. The engagement marked the revival of the India–Canada Ministerial Energy Dialogue, signalling renewed momentum in bilateral energy relations.

The dialogue coincided with the first-ever participation of a Canadian Cabinet Minister at IEW. Canada’s Minister of Energy and Natural Resources, Timothy Hodgson, met with India’s Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas, Hardeep Singh Puri, culminating in the signing of a joint statement on energy cooperation.

The renewed engagement follows guidance issued by the Prime Ministers of both countries during the G7 Summit in Kananaskis in June 2025, where leaders underscored the need to restore senior-level and working-level interactions. During the Goa meeting, the ministers emphasised the strategic importance of energy security and supply diversification in supporting economic resilience and societal well-being.

Both nations highlighted the complementary strengths of their energy sectors. Canada is scaling up liquefied natural gas (LNG) capacity, expanding crude oil exports through the Trans Mountain Expansion pipeline, and increasing LPG shipments to Asian markets. India, meanwhile, remains the world’s third-largest oil consumer, fourth-largest LNG importer, and third-largest LPG consumer, supported by the fourth-largest refining capacity globally.

Recognising these synergies, the two sides agreed to enhance bilateral trade in LNG, LPG, crude oil, and refined petroleum products, while also exploring large-scale joint investment opportunities across the energy value chain.

The discussions extended beyond conventional fuels to include collaboration in clean and climate-focused technologies. Priority areas identified included renewable energy, hydrogen, biofuels, sustainable aviation fuel, energy storage solutions, critical minerals, and the application of artificial intelligence in energy systems.

India and Canada reaffirmed their commitment to closer government-to-government coordination, stronger industry partnerships, and multilateral cooperation, aimed at strengthening global energy supply chains while advancing shared climate and sustainability goals.
