India and Nepal Deepen Energy Cooperation with New Cross-Border Transmission Projects
Oct 31, 2025
In a major boost to regional power connectivity, POWERGRID Corporation of India and the Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) have signed agreements to establish two high-voltage 400 kV cross-border transmission systems — the Inaruwa (Nepal)–New Purnea (India) and Lamki (Dododhara) (Nepal)–Bareilly (India) links. The initiative aims to strengthen electricity trade and energy cooperation between the two countries.
The signing took place following a meeting in New Delhi between Kulman Ghising, Nepal’s Minister for Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation, and Manohar Lal, India’s Union Minister for Power and Housing & Urban Affairs. The discussions focused on expanding bilateral collaboration in the power sector, particularly in hydropower development and regional grid integration to enhance energy security and enable greater use of clean energy across borders.
As part of this initiative, Joint Venture and Shareholders’ Agreements (JV&SHA) have been signed between POWERGRID, a Maharatna Central Public Sector Enterprise (CPSE) under the Government of India, and NEA. These agreements pave the way for the creation of two joint venture entities—one in India and one in Nepal—for the implementation of large-scale cross-border transmission infrastructure.
The proposed projects will include the construction of 400 kV Double Circuit (Quad Moose) Transmission Lines connecting Inaruwa–New Purnea and Lamki (Dododhara)–Bareilly. Upon completion, these corridors will significantly increase power exchange capacity, enhance grid stability, and support sustained economic growth in both nations.
This collaboration marks another milestone in India–Nepal energy relations, reinforcing their long-standing diplomatic partnership and shared vision for sustainable development and regional energy resilience.
