India Poised to Become Global Renewable Manufacturing and Export Hub: MNRE Secretary

Mar 02, 2026

India holds significant potential to position itself as a global centre for renewable energy manufacturing, project development, and exports, said Santosh Kumar Sarangi, Secretary of the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), at the annual meeting of the Sustainable Projects Developers Association (SPDA) in New Delhi.

Addressing policymakers and industry stakeholders, Sarangi stated that India’s ambition to become a developed nation by 2047 will require rapid scaling of clean, dependable electricity to power high-growth, energy-intensive sectors such as data centres, artificial intelligence, and IoT-based services.

He observed that the renewable energy landscape is evolving beyond large utility-scale solar and wind projects. Future growth is expected to be driven by distributed energy systems, green open access frameworks, and prosumer-led models supported by digital platforms and the India Energy Stack. Hybrid projects and storage-integrated solutions are gaining traction, as standalone solar and wind installations may not always align with distribution companies’ demand patterns.

Sarangi also highlighted the importance of proactive transmission planning and urged distribution companies (DISCOMs) to transition toward Electricity-as-a-Service models backed by digital monitoring tools and smart grid technologies. He added that commercial and industrial demand, along with emerging sectors such as green hydrogen, will play a key role in driving new renewable installations.

SPDA Chairman Vineet Mittal, who also leads the Avaada Group, noted that India’s renewable sector has grown from megawatt-scale projects to annual capacity additions of nearly 50 GW, supporting close to one million jobs. He stressed that the next phase of expansion must prioritise deeper localisation across the supply chain, including balance-of-system components, to enhance energy security and industrial resilience.

Mittal added that scaling up hybrid and storage-backed renewable projects will be essential for achieving India’s 500 GW non-fossil fuel capacity target. The event witnessed participation from leading renewable developers and manufacturers such as ACME, Waaree, Serentica, Azure Power, Aditya Birla Group, and Sembcorp.

SPDA also announced the appointment of Sandeep Kashyap, CEO of Purvah Green Power, as its president for a one-year term. The association said it plans to strengthen policy advocacy across renewable energy, green hydrogen, and storage segments, while expanding its global engagement.
